Top Cycling Routes Near Four Lakes Retreat
1. Red Squirrel Trail
 
Distance: 32 miles (loop) – Ideal for families and leisure riders
 
This mostly traffic-free trail meanders through quiet woodlands, estuaries, and open countryside. You can join sections of it near Four Lakes for shorter, more manageable rides.
 
2. Newport to Sandown via Alverstone
 
Distance: Approx. 12 miles one way – Gentle terrain
 
A relaxed route through meadows and sleepy villages, perfect for a half-day outing with café stops along the way.
 
3. Cowes to Newport Cycle Path
 
Distance: 6 miles (flat, tarmac) – Easy and beginner-friendly
 
Following a disused railway line, this flat and paved track is a breeze for all ages. Ideal for young families or a quick morning ride.
 
4. Yarmouth to Freshwater Trail
 
Distance: 4 miles (one way) – Short and scenic
 
A coastal ride along an old railway line with sea views, wildflowers, and birdlife. Great for a picnic at either end.
 
5. Bembridge Trail (Harbour Loop)
 
Distance: Approx. 5–6 miles – Coastal and easy-going
 
A gentle loop around Bembridge Harbour with views of the sea, passing beach huts and local cafés — a lovely lazy-day route.
 
6. The Round the Island Route
 
Distance: 65 miles (full loop) – For experienced cyclists
 
Up for a challenge? This iconic coastal loop is the ultimate way to see the island’s dramatic cliffs, rolling downs, and charming towns.
 
7. Wight Mountains Challenge (West Wight Loop)
 
Distance: 25 miles – Hilly and rewarding
 
Cycle through the rugged and wild west of the island, where steep climbs are rewarded with open vistas and dramatic coastlines.

'Our Sundays'

St Catherines Lighthouse

Walk to see St Catherine light house, park along St Catherines road.
Stroll down Castlehaven lane, stop at the tiny rocky beach and grab an
ice-cream at the cafe then stroll across the fields to get closer to the
light house then baqck up the stepped footpath to the Bugle coaching inn
for a well deserved drink and bag of crisps.

Steephill cove

Park in the front garden on Steephill Road – pay in the honesty box
attached to the garage. Walk down Love Lane to the steps and down to
Steep Hill cove – this hidden gem, go on Lowish tide if you can and go
rock pooling. Lunch at the beach Shack is great and gives you fuel to
make your way back up the hill to your car – if your feeling very
energentic walk along the cliff path into Ventnor then back up the hill
turning left at the top back past the gardens and Ventnor park back to
your car.

Gurnard to Cowes stroll 

Park up in Gurnard along Prince’s Esplanade closer to the playground
means the longer walk so the further you drive along heading for Cowes
the shorter the stroll. Walk along the promande watching the boats past
the Yacht Squadron and the Globe pub and into Cowes great for an
Ice-cream or lunch and a mooch around the shops.
